Houston: Administrators of the Joomla blogging platform and content management system (CMS) can now tag their content so that it will be better indexed and mechanically routed to the correct locations on their websites. The newest version of the open source software, Joomla 3.1 comes with a refreshed user interface and speedier installation process.
The latest feature Tags, lets users to tag articles, news feeds, contacts and other forms of content. A tag is a short phrase or word that sums up the nature of content being tagged. Once a part of content is tagged, Joomla can automatically put it to blogs, lists and other layouts chosen to show such targeted content. Tags are also useful for search engines as it gives them more information to scrutinize the content.
Earlier, the tagging of content was only feasible through the use of third-party add-ons, though other content management platforms like WordPress and Drupal have offered this feature since long. The addition of tagging capabilities to the core of Joomla also prepares the stage for other superior Joomla features which are now being developed and would rely on tagging, according to Open Source Matters, the nonprofit association that offers organizational, financial and legal support to Joomla project.
Some other features to this release take in:
- A one-click upgrade process
- Updated tools for handling access control
- Joomla User Interface library that provides standardized interface components
Together with Drupal and WordPress, Joomla is one of the leading open source content publishing platforms available for blogging and building websites. Thus, according to Open Source Matters, the software has been downloaded more than 40 million times.
